Japanfs Statement

Third Review Conference of the CCW: Special Session Commemorating the Entry into Force of Protocol V

Mr. President,

I would like to make a few remarks on the historic occasion of the entry into force of@the Protocol V to present a position of the Japanese Government.

Mr. President,

In 2003 the States Parties to the CCW adopted Protocol V, which includes general measures for post-conflict recovery and preventive measures related to explosive ordinance production and management, to minimize the danger and humanitarian impact to civilians post-conflict caused by ERW.  As part of the international effort toward humanitarian problems the entry into force of Protocol V is immensely significant.

Mr. President,

Even before the adoption of Protocol V, Japan was actively cooperating with Afghanistan, Cambodia and Laos in UXO and landmine clearance.  Japan attaches importance to this type of international cooperation and take further action based on the increase in international momentum that has accompanied the entry into force of the Protocol.

Thank you.
